Cuban boxer Kevin Brown left this week the Cuban delegation that will participate in the Elite Men’s and Women’s Continental Boxing Championship, to be held in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Brown, 28 years old and a native of the municipality of Nuevitas, Camagüey, took advantage of a stopover at the airport of Tocumen, Panama, to “defect”.

The news was announced through social networks by Carolina Mayorquim, judge and amateur boxing supervisor. The information was confirmed by Félix Anazco Ramos, sports journalist of the pro-government newspaper Adelante, from Camagüey.

“Camagüey’s Kevin Brown left the Domadores de Cuba team yesterday in Panama, while they were on their way to the Continental Boxing Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador,” the information reads.

Kevin Brown, from the 67 kg division, was traveling along with world bronze medalist Herich Ruiz (86 kg), Lima 2019 bronze medalist Damian Arce (54 kg), experienced Jorge Moirán (63.5 kg) and rookies Billy Rodríguez (48 kg), Erislán Romero and Rafael Joubert (60 kg).

Brown participated in the 2021 World Boxing Championship in Serbia. Now he will seek to enter professional boxing.

Kevin Brown began boxing as a child. He participated in the National School Games and, in 2005, at the age of 11, he won bronze at the national level. Between 2006 and 2009 he won the Cuban title in the 42, 44 and 48 kilogram divisions.

In 2010 he was a member of the National Youth Boxing Preselection and won national titles from 2010 to 2012.

Brown was champion in the World Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan, in 2011. At the age of 18 he was a semifinalist in Chechnya and World Youth Champion at 64 kilograms.

This same month, Cuban Fernando Dayán Jorge, Olympic canoeing champion in Tokyo 2020, deserted the delegation with which he was traveling to Mexico for training.

During 2021 and so far in 2022, more than 30 high-level athletes have left Cuba.

The country is experiencing a deep economic crisis, with high levels of shortages and inflation that is growing every day.
